Corsica – an island of beauty

Corsica is an island with a special status (officially “collectivité territoriale de Corse”), made up of two departments: Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse. After nearly four centuries as part of the Republic of Genoa, Corsica declared itself independent on January 30, 1735, giving rise to the first democratic constitution in modern history (1755). Genoa ceded Corsica to France on May 15, 1768, and France conquered it militarily at the battle of Ponte Novu on May 9, 1769.

A LANDSCAPE OF THE WORLD’S FIRST MORNING….

The richness of the Corsican landscape makes any attempt at description extremely difficult, as splendors as varied as high peaks, legendary valleys, fierce or harmonious gulfs, sheltered coves, gentle or scorching beaches, cliffs sculpted by man and sea spray, hillsides born for vineyards and olive groves all rub shoulders, intermingle or clash between the azure sea and the celestial horizon.

Situated at the crossroads of the sea routes from France to Italy and the Orient, and from Central Europe to Italy and Spain, Corsica, with its 8772 km2, 183 km long, 83 km wide and 1000 km of coastline, is the highest of the Mediterranean islands. Just a few kilometers from the sea, it rises to an altitude of 2710 meters!

From a past as fascinating as it is complex, Corsica has preserved not only an unusual personality, but also traces of archaeological, artistic and cultural riches that researchers, museum curators, teachers and simply wise old men invite us to discover in the Sites de l’Histoire, the Churches or on the corner of a simple alley. But the history of Corsica is also that of the Bandits d’Honneur and the Vendetta, or that of the Moor’s Head Flag.

The Corsican table is filled with tasty products. Generous wines accompany cured meats where Lonzu, Coppa or Figgatellu remind us of these traditions still respected today. Brucciu, a sheep’s or goat’s cheese served with brandy or used in pastries, completes a meal around wild boar stew. Pulenta and beignets also bring us back to these culinary traditions, in which chestnut and olive trees play a key role.
