X-Country skiing in Norway
Ski the Peer Gynt trail, a unique ski tour in a beautiful winter landscape with groomed trails, mountain views and varied terrain. It’s located near the Olympic city of Lillehammer, on one of Norway’s best cross-country ski areas.
Discover the legendary Peer Gynt ski run, in a winter wonderland that stretches from the enchanting Espedalen valley to the picturesque mountain resort of Skeikampen. The trail is named after a local Norwegian hero, characterized in fiction by author Henrik Ibsen.
As you glide along the track, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the Jotunheimen, Rondane and Dovrefjell mountain ranges, snow-draped forests and frozen lakes.
The trail lies between 700 and 1500 meters above sea level. Whether you’re a seasoned cross-country skier or a family interested in a slightly more challenging but enjoyable skiing experience, the Peer Gynt ski trail has something for everyone. The trail is meticulously groomed, offering flowing routes, and you can choose to take detours for longer stages. By staying two nights in each mountain lodge, you have the freedom to ski longer or shorter days in between.
Nature lovers will be delighted to catch a glimpse of the native flora and fauna as you ski through this pristine wilderness. Keep your eyes peeled for elk and deer. The trail is also a journey through Norwegian culture and history, as you’ll encounter several summer farms that give you a glimpse of local traditions and hospitality.
You’ll stay in some fine hotels and lodges along the way. Destinations along the trail include Espedalen, Fefor, Gålå and Skeikampen – all renowned ski resorts with a long tradition in winter tourism and known for having some of the best cross-country terrain in Norway. While you’re skiing, your luggage is transported to the next accommodation. All you need to bring is a small rucksack with extra clothes and food for the day. This is a self-guided hike. Although the trail is marked, you should be familiar with the use of maps in addition to the tour description.
