X-Country skiing – Norway – Jotunheimen

Stretches from the area north of Lemonsjøen, westwards to Gjende and the Jotunheimen National Park.

Jotunheimen cross-country trail stretches through gentle forest areas and rough mountain terrain, from the area north of Lemonsjøen, westwards to Gjende and the Jotunheimen National Park.

The tracks are always well prepared by machine or snowmobile and marked to ensure safety at all times. If you are lucky, you can experience both reindeer and moose crossing the ski tracks. Take your time to enjoy the enchanting countryside and listen to the silence.

Most nights, you stay in traditional family-run mountain lodges. There you have plenty of time to explore the surroundings and enjoy the good mountain life. We also promise you some extraordinary food experiences. With access to Norwegian wild gems like reindeer, moose, deer, and trout, an authentic culinary adventure is waiting for you.

Along the way, you will also spend two nights in a cabin at Sjodalen Hyttetun. Here you can sign up for dog sledding on Thursday.

The trail runs about 850 – 950 meters above sea level. The entire Jotunheimen cross-country trail is frequently groomed and regular cross-country skis can be used. Except at Lemonsjøen, the trails are not suitable for skate skis.

With luggage transfer – Without a guide:
While you are out skiing, your luggage is transported to the next accommodation. You only have to bring a small backpack with extra clothes and food.

A self-guided tour is an adventure on your own terms – giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace while we take care of the logistics.

Day 4: Fefor

Ski from Lemonsjøen to Sjodalen

Average day-trip through pine- and birch forest. During rough winter days, the forest areas provide cover and make the trip a pleasant experience. On this lap, you go up the valley, never very far from the main road through Sjodalen. You must cross the road a few times. There is not much traffic during the winter.
At Randsverk you pass through the community of small farms, and at Randsverk Camping you find a shop, a cafeteria and tourist information.

Accommodation in cabins at Sjodalen Hyttetun

Day 5: Sjodalen

We recommend joining a dogsledding adventure to experience Jotunheimen in a whole different way. You book and pay for the dog sledding on site.

You can also go skiing across the valley or rent snowshoes for a walk in the woods.

Day 6: Ski from Sjodalen to Bessheim

Distance: 25 km

Today you will spend most of the time on the east side of the valley and you’ll experience a more open terrain and views of the peaks in Jotunheimen National Park. You start following the river Sjoa. You can choose to go East or West of the lake Nedre Sjodalsvatnet. The east side is a bit longer, but much nicer. When you reach Øvre Sjodalsvatnet you go on the east side of the lake. At the intersection at Storhaugen, you turn right and go across the lake to Bessheim.

Bessheim Fjellstue & Hytter

Day 7: Bessheim – Skiing in the area

We recommend a ski tour to Gjendesheim to kind of complete the Jotunheimen cross-country trail by getting to where it actually ends (12 km roundtrip).
You can also explore the Besseggen mountain ridge on skis or snowshoes. Besseggen is the most famous and spectacular route in Jotunheimen National Park. 60 000 people walk the Besseggen ridge every summer – only a few hundred during winter. Ask at the hotel, about the route description and snow conditions, before deciding to walk the actual ridge.
